Doelstelling: Deze studie is een onderzoek naar de vertaling van epistemische modaliteit in Charles Darwins 'On the Origin of Species'. Er wordt vooral gezocht naar verschillen op de schaal van mogelijkheid, waarschijnlijkheid en zekerheid. Hoofdstuk vier van het originele Engelse boek wordt vergeleken met Nederlandse vertalingen, een van T.C. Winkler uit 1860 en een van L. Hellemans uit 2000. De onderzoeksvraag bestaat uit vier subvragen: zijn er verschillen tussen brontekst en de doelsteksten, zijn die verschillen dezelfde voor doeltekst 1 en en doelstekst 2, zijn er verschillen tussen de verschillende modale uitdrukkingen en zijn er verschillen tussen de resultaten van deze studie en die van Annie Brisset (die de Franse vertaling van Clémence Royer bestudeerde)? Middelen of methode: Er worden acht verschillende modale uitdrukkingen gekozen, die uit de brontekst worden gelicht en vergeleken met hun vertaling in doeltekst 1 en doeltekst 2, wat een corpus oplevert van 292 zinnen in de brontekst. Deze zinnen worden telkens vergeleken met hun vertalingen in de beide doelteksten. Resultaten: De resultaten tonen aan dat doeltekst 1 (Winkler) een veel groter percentage aan shifts oplevert dan doeltekst 2 (Hellemans), 19,17% versus 2,39%. Het valt ook op dat de shifts uit doeltekst 1 grotendeels naar 'meer zekerheid' gaan (83,93%) en dat de minderheid naar 'minder zekerheid' gaan (16,07%). In doeltekst 2 is er meer evenwicht, met 57,14% naar 'meer zekerheid' en 42,86% naar 'minder zekerheid'. In die zin vertoont de vertaling van 1860 gelijkenissen met de Franse vertaling.
